Kill It, Cook It, Eat It
Series 1
IN THE first programme, three beef cattle were brought in for slaughter from a local farm. Episodes two and three focused on lamb and pork with the fourth episode an omnibus. With more consumers wanting to know the provenance of the meat they eat, the series provided an understanding of the slaughter process with quite upsetting scenes.
Series 2
A SECOND series of Kill It, Cook It, Eat It on BBC Three in Winter 2007. This time with Julia presenting the show and again, over four consecutive nights and asking “how young is too young when it comes to eating baby animals”.
The slaughter of young animals veal, milk-fed lambs, kid goats and suckling pigs happens regularly in abattoirs around the country throughout the year. As a nation of animal lovers, we may not want to acknowledge consciously that animals are taken from their mothers shortly after birth and put to the slaughterman's knife. But it does happen.
Each programme examined the strong emotions evoked by the slaughter of young animals as an invited group of guests from vegetarians to meat lovers witnessed the slaughter process from a specially-constructed studio at a working abbattoir. They then watched the animals being butchered and cooked, before deciding whether to taste what they had seen slaughtered. The audience offered their views on and attitudes towards the process. The final edition was an omnibus which summarised the series and compiled the best bits to give an overview of the baby meat-producing industry. The series raised important questions including: How are these animals raised? Where do they come from? Should we eat them? How are they killed and gutted? What checks are made to ensure their welfare? Who kills them and who eats them?
The second series was produced by Firefly [now know as Dragonfly] for the BBC.
