Marie Curie Cancer Care

JULIA is an ambassador for Marie Curie Cancer Care – one of the UK’s largest charities, established in 1948 [the same year as the NHS] and celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2008.

Employing more than 2,700 nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals, they expect to provide care to around 27,000 terminally ill patients in the community and in their hospices this year, along with support for their families. They mainly care for people with cancer but also care for people with other life limiting illnesses. Their services are always free of charge to patients and their families, which means that in 2007-08, they needed to raise more than £115 million.

In May 2008 the charity supported a group of women from Yorkshire who were cycling from York to Amsterdam to raise money for the local Marie Curie Hospice in Bradford. Julia was unable to attend the official start of the women’s bike ride from York to Amsterdam which took place on Sunday 24th May 2008 but she went along on the 17th May to wave them off.
